Charles Gatlin & Sons Auto Detailing, now open at 700 W. State St. in Jacksonville, is more than just a place for full-service car and truck detailing; it’s a place with a mission. Owner Charles Gatlin wants to make a difference in the lives of local youth by teaching them valuable work skills and keeping them on a positive path.
A longtime detailer with roots in East St. Louis, Gatlin arrived in Jacksonville in 1989, where he began detailing cars as a way to rebuild his life. Over the past 25 years, he grew his reputation as a skilled detailer, working out of his garage and establishing trust in the community.
Now, Gatlin hopes to use his business to “teach kids work ethics” and help them steer clear of trouble. His motto? “If you want to take the guns out of their hands, put a rag in it.”
He plans to hire young people locally and, as the business grows, bring them in to learn detailing skills as part of an after-school program. By working with the next generation, Gatlin aims to show that with hard work, anyone can achieve their dreams.
“I’ve had a rocky past,” Gatlin shared. “I’ve been in prison, I’ve battled addiction for 30 years. I’m proof of a second chance, and I want to be a role model for kids to stay off that path.”
